Strength Design of Masonry Now Available
The Masonry Society (TMS) with authors Dr. Richard Bennett, Professor at the University of Tennessee and Mr. John Hochwalt, Director of Engineering at KPFF Engineers, have published a practical new design guide: Strength Design of Masonry, which reviews code provisions for this important design method, offers numerous design tips/recommendations, and includes dozens of practical design examples. Topics addressed include an introduction to strength design concepts, background on structural masonry, general design, strength design procedures for beams, walls, columns, and shear walls, requirements for reinforcement and anchor bolts, and recommendations for construction. While the guide addresses unreinforced masonry, the primary focus is reinforced clay and concrete masonry, and is based on the 2016 Edition of TMS 402/602 and the 2018 International Building Code.
Dr. Bennett and Mr. Hochwalt both actively serve on the TMS 402/602 Committee, speak on the topic, and have worked to develop other guides/resources on strength design and masonry in general.
This helpful resource is an excellent resource to learn strength design procedures and to obtain ideas on how to make designs more efficient. As such, students learning masonry, new designers with limited masonry experience, and even experienced practicing engineers, will want a copy of this excellent resource in their bookshelf to both learn from, and to reference.
Strength Design of Masonry was developed as part of The Masonry Society’s (TMS) Independent Author Publication series by the Authors and TMS to meet a common request for specific information on this popular design method.
